The Top 11 activities to do while on your Sipi Falls Safari

Found on the edge of Mount Elgon National Park near the Kenyan border in Eastern Uganda in the district of Kapchorwa, northeast of Sironko and Mbale, Sipi Falls (waterfalls) put on a exquist display of water falling from a rock down to the Sipi river.

The three waterfalls that make up the Sipi Falls set tumble down the cliff and flows off into the plains of eastern Uganda and Kenya.

This region offers fantastic hiking and coffee tours, whilst also leaving you time to relax with views of the mountains and plains.

The Sipi River is named after the ‘Sep’, a plant indigenous to the banks of the River. Resembling a type of wild banana, Sep is a medicinal plant.



There are different starting points for the hike depending on which waterfall to you visit first.

Mount Elgon today is the fourth tallest mountain in East Africa and the best time of the year to climb it is during the dry seasons.

Abseiling & Rock climbing

Another activity around Sipi Falls is abseiling 100 meters down on one of the Sipi Falls. The activity is done from Rob’s Rock. Abseiling is fun and every adrenaline junkie would love it.

If you want to do abseiling, Sipi falls is the place to go. This activity is done at the main water fall and is most enjoyed by adventurous travelers.

You can do safe – guided Rock Climbing both inside of Mount Elgon National Park and in the Sipi Falls Area, even along the Falls themselves, which is quite exhilarating.

Visit to the Coffee plantation

This Arabica coffee is grown within altitudes of 1600m and 1900m, it is the source of income to the Bagishu and Sebei.

This tour gives you an opportunity to learn about the harvest, processing and roast of coffee.

Cultural encounters

There is a lot to see culturally within this area like the Sebei who basically stay around Sipi area. This will give you the opportunity to discover there way of life, dress code and traditional dances.

Bird watching

Sipi falls area is an amazing place for birders, Mount Elgon national park has around 275 bird species which makes it the more interesting.

The birds found in Sipi Falls include Hartlaub’s Turaco, Eastern Bronze-napped Pigeon, Lemon Dove, Dusky-Turtle Dove, African Hill Babbler, Alpine Chat, Black-throated Wattle-eye, Mountain Yellow Warbler, Thick-billed Honey guide, Grey Cuckoo-Shrike.

Trout Fishing

Trout Fishing is done past Sipi Falls on the Sipi River to catch and release basis which is the same as catching releasing Nile Perch in Murchison Falls Park. Fishing can also be done on mountain trout.An early start is recommended for maximum success.

Mountain Biking

This is the most adventurous and thrilling activity around the Sipi Falls as it gives you the opportunity to ride your bike on the Rocky Mountains.

Blaze down the trails on the fourth tallest mountain in Africa, add on top of that the trails nearby Sipi Falls and you will be most satisfied with a variety of trails that you can enjoy, especially during the dry seasons of the year.

Visit the Sipi River

Apart from visiting the 3 waterfalls you could also take a time and visit the Sipi River.

Enjoy a walk along this river with its beautiful scenery.

Visit the Nyero Rock Paintings and Caves

Nyero Rock Paintings and CavesThese are acient rock paintings and were created thosandas of years ago by ancient cave dwellers who were the first inhabitants of the area.

The Rock painting remain in relatively good shape having survived thousands of the year.  There are several other rock painting sites within the general area.

The Abayudaya Jews of Uganda

This community is 100 years old and located in eastern Uganda near Mount Elgon and Sipi Falls. To be part of this community is by choice and not by lineage.

They have Schools that teach a Jewish and Ugandan curriculum.  They also have a modern hospital and state of Arc Dental Department.

They partner with Christians and Muslims in a fair-trade coffee venture that has proven to be very successful.

Budadiri Community Walk

This community group, based in Budadiri, offers cultural dances, guided coffee tours and community nature walks.

Nature lovers can indulge in one of the three trails like Namugabwe Cave Trail, passing through BaMasaba community land and banana plantations to reach a historical cave filled with bones.

The Dirigana Loop Trail to the Dirigsana Falls and Gabushana Cave past local markets and the “Walls of Death.”

The Sipi Falls area is particularly famous for locally grown Arabic coffee.

An interactive Cultural Community Walk like in the Bunduri Community no to far from Mount Elgon.

You can visit Sipi Falls anytime of the year though it is more fun in the dry season during Jarnuary, July and August.
