The Mgahinga Gorilla Park is 33.7 sq. km making it Uganda’s smallest park. However small the park is, it adjoins the volcanoes national park in Rwanda and Virunga national park in Congo.
The park takes its name from Gahinga- the local word meaning piles of volcanic stones cleared from the farmland at the foot of the volcanoes.
It is home to endangered mountain gorillas and golden monkeys, besides primates, there are other mammals like elephants, buffalo, leopards, and giant forest hogs that are rarely encountered in the dense forests.
The park also harbors forest birds and Albertine rift valley endemics like the Striking Rwenzori Turaco. As well as the Virunga Volcanoes i.e., Mount. Gahinga, Mount Muhavura, and Mount Sabinyo

One of the Mahinga’s fascinating activities is the Gorilla trekking, and it takes about 30 min to 3 hours depending on the location of the of the gorillas. In the course of trekking, you be able to hear magnificent sounds of nature, fresh breath-taking air and other mammals like monkeys, birds etc.
On approaching a group of mountain gorillas, you have a one-hour experience of experiencing and interacting with the gorillas having best time to learn on how they feed, their behaviors, habits, breast feed, play and take photographs.
Mgahinga National Park is blessed with exceptional features like Mount Gahinga, Mount Muhavura, and Mount Sabinyo which are situated in the Virunga ranges that cut across Uganda, Rwanda and Congo. Tourists are usually thrilled when they go hiking in the Virunga ranges.
During hiking you pass through steep ridges, dense forests with montane vegetation where you get spectacular scenic views of primate like golden monkeys, duikers, forest elephants, different bird species, and mist clouds.
On the Mount Sabinyo top summit, you will be standing in the three countries i.e., Uganda, Rwanda, and Congo. The top summit of the highest volcano of Mount. Muhavura, offers the spectacular views of other volcanoes, Queen Elizabeth Park, Lake Edward and Rwenzori Mountain ranges.
Mgahinga National Park is the park that harbors endangered golden monkeys and trekking in Uganda, and it offers a curious golden monkey tracking activity that is done in the dense forests.
They are found in the lower areas of volcanoes with fresh leftovers of the bamboo forests. Golden monkey trekking takes about 1 hour to 3 hours depending on the location of their habitat, after encountering them, you are given one hour interacting with them studying their behaviors and habits of feeding, watch them jumping, take photos and record moments.
Mgahinga national park is a home to more than 115 recorded bird species which makes it the best destination for birding. It has got different birding destinations such as Montagne Forest, bamboo belt, the gorge trail between Gahinga and Sabinyo with various stunning birds like Rwenzori batis, blue headed sunbird, streaky seed eater, handsome francolin crowned cane, black kite, cape robin chat bronze sunbird among others.
Mhahinga national park was formerly home of the Batwa or pygmies before it was gazzeted. The Batwa trail involves demonstrations of their cultural dances, hunting skills, bush honey harvesting and gathering skills, show off how to make bamboo cups, fire by rubbing two dry sticks against each other.
Also visit Garamba cave which acted as food storage and hiding place for the Batwa among others. The trail ends with storytelling and dance presentations by Batwa women.
